Your Future in Health Information Management (HIM)

HIM program graduates are working for acute care, long-term care, rehabilitation facilities, home health and hospice agencies, clinics, software vendors, consulting firms, insurance companies, correctional facilities, psychiatric hospitals, alcohol and drug dependency programs, quality assessment and utilization management, copy services, military facilities, educational programs, disease registries, and others. CHIA has developed a Careers: Health Information Management flyer. Click Here to view, download and print out.

To meet these dynamic changes in health information management, the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) has identified the following emerging roles for Health Information Professionals as being: Clinical Data Specialist, Patient Information Coordinator, Data Quality Manager, Research Analyst, Data Resource Administrator, and Security Manager. The impact of quality data is reflected through its impact on medical research and the decision to identify two specific roles for these areas. Confidentiality and data security, particularly with the computerized patient record, are emphasized through the role of a Security Manager.

Life-long learning is vitally important to the HIM professional as the roles and responsibilities of the profession continue to change. The successful HIM professional recognizes the need to update and refresh knowledge and skills through continuing education programs and opportunities. CHIA and AHIMA strive to provide life-long learning opportunities, as does many of the HIM educational programs in California.
