Online Education for Release of Health Information in California Course
The purpose of this educational module is to provide accurate and authoritative information on proper and adequate disclosure of health information. RELEASE OF PROTECTED INFORMATION IN CALIFORNIA TO CORONER'S OFFICE
This module will assist the student in understanding Federal Privacy Laws (HIPAA) regarding release of Protected Health Information (PHI) to Coroner's Office and California State Laws regarding the function of the agencies, what PHI may be released upon request, whether a signed authorization for release of information is necessary and what State regulations apply in this context. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the Release of Information to the Coroner's Office module, students will be able to:
1. Understand the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of patient records and protected health information (PHI) and what PHI may be released upon request to the Coroner's Office.
2. Describe federal and state legislation regarding patient privacy and release of information as it relates to the duties of the Coroner's Office.

INSTRUCTOR
Marta De La Torre, MBA, RHIA, CHP, is currently the Service Line Leader of Revenue Cycle for Saint Agnes Medical Center, Fresno, CA. Directly reporting to her are Centralized Scheduling, Pre-Admission Registration, Pre-Certification, Registration (Inpatient, Outpatient and ED), HIM, Revenue Integrity, Contracting and Patient Financial Services.
Marta has over 20 years of health care experience, primarily in the Health Information Management profession. She is a Registered Health Information Administrator, certified in Health Care Privacy and a former instructor of Coding and Reimbursement at Fresno City College Health Information Technology program, Fresno CA and Mesa City College in San Diego.
Recent projects include Occupancy Planning Project Lead for the 265,000 foot expansion of the medical center, interim directorship for Holy Cross Clinic at Poverello House (a free clinic) and Holy Cross Center for Women (a homeless women’s shelter), HIPAA, interim director of Chaplaincy Services.
She is a past Board member of the California Health Information Assn and serves on numerous association committees both at the state and national levels. She is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Healthcare Finance Management Association.

EXAM
Each exam is scored automatically online. The exam will be either multiple choice or true/false. Passing score is 70 for this module. Exams may not be retaken. Sample self-assessment questions have been placed throughout the module.
This module is designed so that you may leave and re-enter the module material as you desire. However, once you take the final exam, you will no longer have access to this module.
EVALUATION
The student will be given an opportunity to comment on this module, if expectations for this module were met, and to comment on other educational modules they would like to see developed.
CEUs
The student, after successfully completing this module and passing the exam will be able to print out a Certification of Completion (CEU form). Two CEUs (HIM Domain: Privacy and Security) are offered for this module. Print and retain online Certificate of Completion as evidence of completion.
